MI is primarily responsible for cellular glucose uptake and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) signalling, both of which are vital for healthy ovulation. DCI, on the other hand, is more involved in glycogen synthesis and androgen regulation.

Research note: Under normal conditions, the body can convert MI into DCI in specific tissues. But in women with PCOS, this conversion can become disrupted, leading to an imbalance that may contribute to insulin resistance and abnormal ovarian function.
