You've probably noticed adaptogen on more labels lately: Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Ginseng etc. If you’ve never been clear on exactly what these herbal supplements do, we will try to break it down for you below in simple terms.
Adaptogens are one of the more interesting categories in herbal medicine, with a research history going back decades and a traditional use history going back thousands of years. Here's what they actually are, how they work in the body, and which ones have the strongest evidence behind them.
What adaptogens actually are
An adaptogen is a plant compound that helps your body adapt to stress, whether that stress is physical, mental, or environmental. The defining feature is that they're non-specific. Rather than targeting one symptom or system, they help your body cope with a wide range of challenges and nudge things back towards balance.
To be classified as a true adaptogen, a herb needs to meet three criteria. It has to be safe and non-toxic at normal doses. Its action has to be non-specific, meaning it increases resistance to multiple types of stressors. And it has to be normalising, helping the body return to baseline regardless of which direction things have drifted.
The term itself is relatively modern, but the plants are not. Ginseng has been central to Traditional Chinese Medicine for around 4,000 years, where it’s known as the "superior" tonic, used to nourish vitality and prevent disease rather than treat acute symptoms. In Ayurveda, herbs like ashwagandha, holy basil, and shatavari are classified as rasayanas, meaning rejuvenators. They've been used for at least three millennia to promote longevity, support recovery, and increase resistance to illness.
Worth knowing: Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda recognised a category of herbs that didn't fit the usual "this herb for that symptom" model. Instead, these were used as broad-spectrum tonics for resilience, vitality, and prevention. That's the same idea modern research has formalised as the adaptogen concept.
How they work in the body
Your body has a built-in stress response system called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA axis for short. When you encounter a stressor, your brain signals your pituitary gland, which signals your adrenal glands to release cortisol and other stress hormones. Once the stressor passes, cortisol levels drop and the system resets.Under chronic stress, the feedback loop that switches the response off starts to fail. Cortisol stays elevated for too long, inflammation rises, sleep suffers, energy drops, and recovery slows. Over time, this looks a lot like burnout.

Adaptogens work by helping that system regulate itself more effectively, essentially an adaptive stress response. In simple terms, adaptogens act like a small, controlled dose of stress that trains your body to respond better to the real thing. At a cellular level, several things are happening. Adaptogens influence the expression of stress hormones like cortisol, supporting the feedback mechanisms that bring it back to baseline rather than letting it stay chronically elevated. They also stimulate production of specific proteins which act as a kind of cellular repair and maintenance crew from stress-induced damage.
Adaptogens also modulate the production of a peptide involved in resilience and energy regulation. The combined effect is what researchers describe as a multitarget action: adaptogens make subtle adjustments across many systems at once.
Research note: A 2021 review in Medicinal Research Reviews documented how adaptogens act on at least 88 stress-related genes and influence signalling pathways involved in inflammation, neuroprotection, and metabolic regulation. This multitarget action is why a single adaptogen can have effects across so many different systems.
The result is what's often described as a normalising effect. When cortisol is chronically high (the classic burnout pattern), adaptogens help bring it down. When the stress response is sluggish and you feel flat and depleted, they help bring it up. Same herb, opposite effects, depending on what your body needs.

Adaptogens don't push your body in one direction. They help it find its way back to balance, whichever direction it's drifted from.
The popular adaptogens, and what each one is known for
The strongest evidence sits around stress-related fatigue, mental performance under pressure, mild to moderate depression, and recovery from illness or exertion. The European Medicines Agency has approved several adaptogenic herbs as traditional herbal medicinal products for these uses.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Probably the most researched adaptogen for stress and anxiety, with several randomised controlled trials showing reductions in perceived stress and cortisol levels. Also studied for sleep, cognitive function, and exercise recovery. Comes from Ayurveda, where it's been used for thousands of years for longevity and vitality.
Rhodiola rosea
The standout for mental fatigue and burnout. Studies show it can improve concentration, reduce stress-related exhaustion, and support mood in mild depression. It's approved across parts of Europe as a traditional herbal medicine for symptoms of stress and weakness.
Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng)
The original tonic herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Used for general energy, immune support, cognitive function, and convalescence. Particularly well-studied for reducing the duration and severity of colds and flu, and for supporting mental performance under fatigue.
Holy basil (Tulsi)
A staple in Ayurveda, traditionally taken daily as a tea or fresh leaf for stress, mood, blood sugar balance, and immune support. The clinical research base is smaller than for ashwagandha or rhodiola but growing.
Eleuthero (Siberian ginseng)
Not actually a true ginseng, despite the name. Used for stamina, immune support, and recovery from illness, particularly during periods of high physical or mental demand.
Safety, and what to know before you start
Adaptogens have a strong safety profile when used at standard doses. Across decades of clinical trials and post-market surveillance, serious adverse events are rare. The European Medicines Agency, after reviewing the data on rhodiola, ginseng, and eleuthero, concluded these herbs are well-tolerated at recommended doses.
That said, "natural" doesn't mean "no interactions." Adaptogens can interact with medications, particularly those affecting blood pressure, blood sugar, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, and some psychiatric drugs. Quality also varies enormously between products, since herbal preparations are sensitive to growing conditions, extraction methods, and standardisation.
The bigger picture
Adaptogens aren't a quick fix, and they're not magic. They're a category of herbs with thousands of years of traditional use and a respectable, still-developing body of modern research, supporting your body's ability to handle stress and recover from it.
The most useful way to think about them is as one tool among several. Sleep, nutrition, movement, and connection do the structural work. Adaptogens can support that foundation, particularly during periods of higher demand on your system. Used that way, with realistic expectations and good-quality products, they earn their place in the modern wellness toolkit.
